PERSEPHONE

Persephone had made her mind up, that day, to venture out from Luthien once again. She grew restless staying in her home for too long, although it was necessary to keep her claim on the place secure – leaving it alone constantly would be too dangerous. There were still many places she needed to visit on these so called Lost Islands, wanting to familiarise herself with the whole land and all its rulers as much as possible.

Knowledge was power, and she intended to acquire it.

And so she was meandering lazily through the trees, the bare tips of their branches offering her their encouragement as they stroked her sides when she passed along the narrow paths between them, when she encountered her visitor. Tending to stay in the depths of the Forest, Persephone had not heard or sensed the stranger’s arrival until she had come to the edge of the trees where they thinned out and melted into open grasses that led down to the shore.

Interestingly enough, this time her unexpected visitor was a mare. It was a welcome change.

Persephone let out a quiet nicker to announce her presence as she emerged from the trees, not wanting to startle the stranger who seemed quite content grazing in this quiet spot, and approached her.

“Hello,” she began simply, her dark eyes scanning over the slender gold-and-white mare. She was an elegant, pretty thing – her fine, shiny coat only gleamed all the more beside Persephone’s coarse, thickening pelt. Returning her gaze to the stranger’s face, she continued, “Welcome to the Forest. I’m Persephone, can I help you with something?”
