days in the sun will return.

HOW IN THE MIDST OF ALL THIS SORROW
can so much hope and love endure?
Most days there was always someone with Maziel, especially with the herd steadily growing larger as time went by. Today, however, was one of those rare days where the blind mare found herself alone, though she wasn’t particularly troubled for company. Just as Mariael and Zevulun had been, Maziel was born and raised in Tinuvel and her lack of sight did little to deter her familiarity to her home. Having never had it, she’d learned to navigate the Bay in darkness and knew which ways were safest to travel and which places were best to stop.

Today she was tucked away in a cavern, listening as the breeze rattled the forest outside and the ocean roared and crashed against the shoreline. It was a peaceful sound and her head dropped, eyelids feeling heavy as she was being lured to sleep by how relaxing everything was. It was in this state of being half-asleep, half-awake that Maziel heard the sound of hooves shuffling the ground nearby.

Alert, her head jerked up and her ears swiveled, hardly breathing as she listened for familiarity in the steps. She sensed none and instead realized it was a stranger who was coming into the dark cavern she’d sought out for comfort. His hooves echoed on the rock surface (she scented he was a male) and she frowned, realizing he didn’t step quiet as heavily as Zevulun did. It either meant he was light or he was small, but Maziel couldn’t tell either of these things without touching him.

“Uhm, hello…” She said softly from her area in the dark, trying her best not to startle him but bracing in the event that she did.
