Hummingbird moths

I was stunned to see one of these beautiful creatures in our garden. Very small, about half the size of a hummer but with hummer feeding and flying characteristics and a proboscis for gathering nectar. I didn't know such an insect existed.
Does anyone know how common they are or if there are different kinds? This one had a striped thorax of rust and green bands and wings that were mostly translucent tinged with a rust border. I tried to get a photo but it moved on by the time I got back with a camera.
