hello, my old heart.

no one told me life was cruel
What is this male's motive? Winona wondered as she listened to him speak. She barely stopped herself from rolling her eyes at his words. 'I wonder if this is how he picks up all his females,' the snarky part of her brain chimed in, causing her to snort softly with amusement. Normally, she hated this kind of game - after all, it was a bit cheesy. Still, it was unfair for her to criticize him; after all, he was brave enough to approach her, despite her obvious crankiness, and she was very thirsty, her throat feeling drier than a desert. The appaloosa mare pondered his words for another brief moment, before deciding to play along and give him the benefit of the doubt. "Hmm..." she hummed thoughtfully, pausing for the same dramatic effect. "I guess that seems fair. I'm Winona." She introduced herself with an amiable close-lipped smile.

'Don't let your guard down, now,' the little voice in the back of her head warned sternly, reminding her not to give into vulnerability, especially around a handsome stranger. She had had her fair share of unsavory encounters with males in the past, and as a result was hesitant to allow herself to relax around him - at least just yet. Was he going to be the same as the others; the ones that sweet talked and seemed like perfect gentlemen, until they got what they wanted from her? How long would it be until this gracious facade crumbled away, revealing a much uglier personality beneath?

It could be never... but was that even possible? 'Of course! Don't expect any less!' her cynicism hissed insidiously from the depths of her psyche. But she ignored it. Who was she to be thinking these things, as if she had known this male her entire life? She hadn't the faintest idea what his personality might be like, or whether he was truly as kind as he initially appeared. She was making an assessment based on nothing more than her own experiences, and the logical, more reasonable part of her lectured. 'It's unfair to group him in with those others,' she said to herself, feeling a twinge of guilt as she shifted her gaze back to the depths of his clear blue eyes. Could he see the distraction in her eyes, the way her thoughts consumed her attention? She gave another soft smile in the hopes it would reinforce the facade of calmness she held.
