light me up like a bottle rocket

Her blurred vision makes it difficult to see Bob’s expressions, but at least he lets emotion bleed into his voice, so she can still understand what he’s trying to get across. Her father had been the same way, always making sure she’d never felt like she was missing anything. If she’d had less understanding parents, she could have ended up not being able to tell who was genuine and who was false. She couldn’t have gotten any luckier to find two horses that are so transparent in their feelings.

”The pain’s always been there, as long as I can remember,” she shrugs again. ”I’ve almost gotten used to it by now.” That isn’t strictly true but Aurora doesn’t think she’d be able to bear seeing horrorstruck looks on Bob and Talya’s faces if they were to find out that the pain has increased fractionally over her lifetime.

A chilly puff of wind blows her forelock into her eyes and she flicks her head to move the wayward strands, more out of instinct than anything because it’s not like the obstruction makes much of a difference at the moment. She hears Bob’s weight shift and she does the same, letting the crackle of melting snow fill the moment of comfortable silence.

She ponders his words for a moment, thinking that he has confirmed what she’d always imagined her parents had thought as they’d watched her struggle to gain control of her disability. Still, she has a feeling that Bob is more resilient than he outwardly appears. ”I don’t know about that,” she says lightly. ”When you don’t know any other way of life, it can’t really affect your personality. If I had started off normally and had this thrust upon me later, then it may have changed me.”

She smiles over at him, trying not to think of her dreaded worst-case scenario of a day when she won’t be able to see at all. At least then, she thinks to herself with a little snark, she wouldn’t have to see Bob and Talya’s horrified faces. She’ll leave that thought for a time when she’s alone and can silently rail against her unfair lot in life.
