Zevulun’s reaction is everything that Avalon could have hoped for and more. A fierce joy sweeps through her as she makes sure to protect and preserve this moment. If she ever forgets a millisecond of what is happening here, it will be the greatest of tragedies. She swallows thickly as she watches two identical pairs of blue eyes study each other. She may just weep with love.
The foal blinks rapidly, taking in this pale stranger that contrasts with the dark figure that had brought her into the world. She doesn’t feel the urge to shy away from his scrutiny, instead staring right back. The only sign of any distress is the quivering of her muscles as they adjust to holding her up. Her breathing is a little fast because of all her recent effort – being born and greeting her parents is hard work, after all.
She thrusts her pink nose toward the stallion as he approaches, her tiny nostrils flaring as the scent of her father enters her world for the first time. She grins toothlessly up at him in response to his reverent tone. She doesn’t yet know what the word father means, nor can she name the feeling he invokes in her very soul. Safe. One day she will know that this stallion will do everything he can to keep her and her mother and their family safe.
Avalon reaches over and brushes her lips against Zevulun’s neck, needing some kind of outlet for her overwhelming feelings but not wanting to disturb the moment between father and daughter. The pair seem to be transfixed on each other, and the mare cannot blame them. This moment, the three of them together for the first time, is more than she would have ever thought to ask for. This little girl is her crowning jewel, a spot in her heart brighter than she could have ever imagined. She can hardly believe that this is her life.
