fate depends on want

Kav sighed at her mother's encouragement, not out of disappointment but out of relief. If her mother said everything was going to be ok, it meant she wouldn't be leaving again anytime soon. The bay filly wouldn't ask anything more from her for now. She gingerly stepped closer to the black and white mare, feebly lifting her head higher to peer at her mother's face. Something seemed off, just slightly, but Kav was sure it was because she had been gone for so long. If she had known mama was going to leave, she would have examined her face longer to remember every single hair, every single line on her line, exactly how the white spot on her nose used to look.

She allowed her mother to nudge her closer, and indulged in a meal. She hadn't had one in so long. Once her belly was full, she folded her legs sort-of-neatly under herself and leaned gently against her mother's legs. She was, for what seemed like the first time in forever, comfortable and safe. She had forgotten how nice it felt to know someone was looking over her. In a few days, once she had regained her strength, she would protect mother with as much vigor as she could muster. She didn't know how the black and white mare managed to survive without her, but all that mattered now was she was back.

Her head nodded slightly as she kept herself from falling asleep, the milk in her belly weighing her down and the relief of her mother's return easing her mind and body. "Mama," she muttered, "what did you see? Will you take me sometime?" She didn't know exactly where her mother had gone. She supposed she didn't care that much since mama had come back. Still, she couldn't help but feel somewhat curious. For all she knew, mama had seen something magical.
