They said we'd burn so bright.
We burn this city and go.
Morning came, and the spotted stallion hadn't slept at all.
He tried to replay Mariel's words over and over in his mind when the anxiety would creep up, but it did little to calm his wandering thoughts. As such, he moved all night, crunching through the brittle brush and traversing across the hard, elevated terrain of the Bay, only his creamy plumes of exhales cutting through the cold, dark night. Come sunrise, he and Maziel would set off for Luthien.
Paradiso didn't know what made him more anxious: the idea that he was going to spend the entire day alone with Maziel, or the looming tension that would come when he returned to the Prairie and had to face Shamwari. Maziel had become such a bright spot in his life. At least she would be by his side when he delivered the bad news about Vita Nova's disappearance. But Paradiso's relationship with his older brother, the stallion that raised him, essentially, was strained to say the least.
The appaloosa boy only returned to the herd when the twinkling stars overhead began to fade and the first signs of daylight began to warm on the horizon. He did not stir Maziel from her slumber, but waited patiently for her to rise on her own. Shortly after, he led her toward the surf and off they went.
The stallion was overly concerned about Maziel's safety as they swam, and talked at length both because of his general awkwardness around a mare he cared so much about, but also to help steer Maziel in the right direction against the currents toward Luthien. During this swim, Paradiso spilled his guts to her -- telling her tales of his cheery upbringing in the Prairie but how he never met his father, Valentine. He told her about how Shamwari never hesitated to step in as a father figure to him. He talked about how Evaline came in and out of their lives and the ensuing drama that always came with it. Paradiso shared his excitement to see Brienne again, Shamwari's love interest and one of Paradiso's first true friends. He talked about his love for the land -- the rolling golden hills and the warm weather. It was a lot to divulge about himself in such a short period of time. He worried about what Maziel would think of it all.
When the rose from the depths of the surf onto the shoreline of the Prairie, Paradiso was immediately struck by how warm it was here, even in autumn, compared to the Bay. Had it really been that long since he'd been home? The scenery was just how he always remembered it, vast and never changing. He felt a pang of calm wash over him as he reveled in the familiarity of it. "We're here." He said curtly to Maziel after shaking a layer of seawater from his pelt. "This is where I grew up."
