PERSEPHONE

Persephone made her way slowly towards the edge of the Forest from the shore, water still dripping from her pelt. She was returning from one of her short yet regular excursions to the other islands as she tried to keep tabs on the various goings on, and as always the arrival home was refreshing.

She had no idea that the peace she felt here was about to be well and truly disturbed.

Carefully, she began to wind her way through the maze of the Forest, twigs snapping beneath her hooves as she slipped through the trees. There was another sound, however, which caught her attention – some kind of muttering in the distance. Her ears flicked atop her head, determining the direction from which it came, and she headed for it instinctively.

As she drew closer she could hear that it was a man’s voice and familiar – Bob, it seemed. Although odd, at first Persephone thought nothing of it, until she came close enough to make out the words. He was just beyond the next layer of trees now, but his words seemed to cut through the air as if he were whispering into her ear.

I’m going to have to kill her.

Persephone paused, frozen for just a moment as her mind puzzled over what little snippet she had just heard. He must be joking… but he did not sound playful. She rounded the corner and saw him there, alone. There was no one to tell a joke to if it was one.

She took a step towards him, slow and cautious, though she held herself confidently. Her dark eyes were set on him, narrowed in confusion, and her ears pricked forwards attentively.

“Bob…” her tone was blunt and serious, and she held his gaze unwaveringly. “What is going on here?”
