I am the razor in the hands of your heart;
And I am the razor in the hands of God.
While Valve was gone, Evaline had a lot of time to think. Perhaps too much time.
When her brain wasn't fraught with worry over the disappearance of the black mare, Evaline submerged deep into the mistakes of her past. She'd spent a good deal of her life avoiding such thoughts. She'd made some of the most important, life-altering decisions during her existence so brashly. While naturally calculated and cunning, the palomino mare was never one to fester or strategize to an agonizing point. Instinct drove her to do the things she did, and she adjusted accordingly to the consequences that came from her actions. But in her more recent years, perhaps spurred by how she aged, Evaline found herself revisiting memories of the past more frequently. She thought often of past lovers, like Twenty One and Lyden, and the father of her children, Valentine and Rook. She tried not to, but Psychedelic's recent re-intrusion into her life brought up painful, more recent memories of Kasabian and the Lagoon, and of course, her other children. She was surprised by her interest in Talya, upon seeing her in the Forest, and how the filly's simple ways left a lasting and haunting impact upon her.
As such, Evaline wasn't her usual stony self when Valve returned. Hence the need for the embrace, hence the brief moment of vulnerability in which she hung quietly, just content to be in Valve's orbit. She appreciated how long Valve let her hang there, warmly, so close to her. But she was not surprised when it ended. She didn't expect Valve to press her verbally on what lead her to approach her in such a way. But she was silently thankful for Valve's tolerance. So when the black mare chose to pull away, Evaline merely shifted her weight across her four hooves in the sand and breathed a heavy sigh.
Her golden ears flicked forward at Valve's words, and she nodded obediently before kicking out against the sand stiffly and searing after her in a walloping three-beat gait.
