kill the boy and let the man be born

DIAMANT

In a heartbeat the air had changed, and Diamant knew immediately that it was because of what he had said. His face burned with shame and his heart hammered with panic as he looked back and forth between mother and daughter. What he saw written on their faces terrified him, and suddenly he could see his future. It was all there, laid out before him.

They would leave. He would remain here, doomed to be a prisoner of Mariael's for the rest of time, too emasculated to fight for his own freedom. Whatever feelings remained between him and Macabre would shrivel away until there was nothing left, and their daughter would grow up somewhere far away. They would both become strangers, and even if Diamant found happiness and peace someday, how he had treated them would always remain his greatest regret.

He inhaled a trembling breath and let the image melt away. No.

"I'm sorry, I'm just... I didn't expect this. But of course, of course I want to know her. And you. I don't intend to disappear on either of you." He managed a weak smile, which quickly faded at Macabre's question. Conflicting emotions swirled in his gut. Should he be honest? In front of his daughter? "I... It's complicated. I came here when I found out about my parents... I don't know if Jetta told you. It's not important. I just wanted to see what it was like - our family lineage began here."

He paused and shifted his weight, amber eyes roaming the ground as though searching for answers. "I didn't mean to stay so long, but the leader of this place was... was determined to keep me here. I don't think I can leave."
