The safest is not to take any risks in life!
it really depends on your level,experience, income, career aspirations and perhaps age.

It is indeed a bumpy road, but not impossible as some portray it. usually it needs a minimum of 2-3 years to get everything signed off.

A supportive unit will also help. this is something which needs to be discussed at the time of the interview and get their written confirmation to support your CESR progress.
