Grahame,

It sounds like you have Fibre to the Premises (FTTP). If so the following may be helpful:

As your NBN connection runs off power, your NBN services will not work (including calls to Emergency ‘000’ services) in a power outage – unless you;

Kept your traditional (copper) phone service
Have a battery backup (selected FTTP customers)
Are a Medical Priority Assistance customer.
We recommend you have a mobile phone available, in case you are seeking emergency assistance during a power outage.

If you kept your traditional phone service
If you chose, or we recommended for you to keep your traditional phone service (Telstra Voice Standard), if you’re using a corded phone this phone service should continue to be available during a power outage.

Cordless phones require a power and won’t work during a power outage. To be able to use your phone service in a power outage, connect a corded phone or use your mobile phone.

If you have a battery backup (selected Fibre to the Premise (FTTP) customers)
If you’ve told us you have a special requirement for a battery backup or are a Medical Priority Assistance customer, your bundle will include a Telstra Voice Standard service with a battery backup.

During a power outage, the battery will provide power for a limited time (approximately five hours), allowing you to make and receive calls on your corded home phones, connected directly to the UNI-V port on your nbn connection box. Cordless phones that require power to a base station will not work during a power outage.

For more information please refer to the user guide supplied by nbn Co at the time of installation or visit www.nbnco.com.au/battery

Cheers

Tony
