We found each other in the dark

Through the black starless water,
And the cold lonely air.
On the rock restless seas.

He had been living quietly in the shadows since Talya brought him here. It wasn't that the young, painted stallion was afraid to get to know the other horses that Tayla relied on, it was more that they were ... too busy to realize he was there, hovering at the fringes. Ruxin was used to hiding. He was good at it. So when Talya was gone or busy with another horse, in the thicket he remained. The silence and the solace never bothered him.

In truth, Ruxin had no idea what to do with himself now that he had found his sister. He was anxious to meet this mama-pappa character Talya spoke so much about, but before this day, he had never seen him before. He hadn't seen any signs of the golden mare either, much to his relief. It seemed that Talya had found a nice pocket for herself here. Even though Ruxin hardly had a good idea of what life was actually like in the Forest.

On this very morning, the brown and white stallion awoke in the moist earth under a canopy of trees. Rays of sunlight that peeked through the dense foliage warmed his coat. He came around slowly, sleep still heavily upon him as he yawned and stretched his legs. He was just in the early movements of standing, leaf litter and damp dirt still clinging to his legs and barrel when he heard the commotion.

One copper-colored ear lobe flicked forward and then the other. His wide, brown eyes looked out through the maze of trees in the direction of the sounds of a scuffle with interest and some hesitation. There was no sign of Talya around, but that wasn't uncommon. Talya's energy kept her bouncing around the Forest at all hours. Curious, the young stallion set out cautiously to investigate.

He came to a dead stop behind several feet of thick brush when he saw a clutter of horses in the nearby clearing. There she was. The golden mare. Seeing her there, with her scars and dainty, frail frame, and that terrifying mutilated ear, sent a shiver down the boy's spine. He was breathless, if only for a second, sucking his stomach into himself in uncertainty. But too much was happening at once for him to really process his emotions. A painted stallion stood at the opposite end of her, angry and aggressive, looking as if he was ready to explode. Nearby was a roan mare, one Ruxin recognized with vague familiarity. He had seen her drift by upon occasion when he hid in the woods. Then all of a sudden, a large chestnut stallion appeared.

And then... Talya. Crack.

It was as if his world had gone dark. The stallion heard nothing but a dull ringing in his his ears. The two stallions fled at high speeds. His heart was beating so fast in his chest he thought it might actually explode. With every fiber of his being, Ruxin resisted the strong urge to run to her, to the young filly laid out on her side on the ground. The golden mare was still there and he couldn't trust himself to be around her. Instead he stood stiffly, internalizing his emotions, but tears still welled in the bottom of his eyes. Evaline remained there, waiting. Then the roan mare returned. They hovered around the filly, but Ruxin couldn't bear to watch any longer. Solemnly he fled, picking up speed the farther away he got from his sister's limp body. He followed the dug out juts of earth the larger stallions had cut up on their gallop away, all the way to the shoreline. The boy was crying so much by the time he reached the sea he could barely make out the waves at all. But he never faltered. Into the cold waters he waded, hoping and praying he'd drown this time before he found the next sparce of land.
