“Tum moorkh ho!” Aarushi hissed, curved ears pinned as her eyes glowered at her brother.

Aadhira winced, his ears turning outward as he chewed the air nervously, ducking his head and flattening his tail head against his hind. His appearance did not soothe the irritation Aarushi felt for him. The black threads of her tail cracked hard against her haunches and her slender neck lifted, pulling her head over her hindquarters, her lips drawn in a flat line of displeasure as she watched him.

“Mujhe tumhen saja dena chaahie.” She said in a level tone.

Aadhira snorted, his ears flicking back. “Yah mainne jo kiya tha, use nahin badala jaega. Main ise phir se karoonga.” He did not lift his eyes to look at her, but spoke in a sulky tone.

Aarushi inhaled sharply, nostrils flared. Rage became the fire in her eyes as she looked down at her brother. Her flat teeth grinded hard together, ears pinning tighter against her neck, all but lost in her inky-black hair. Quickly she snapped out, her mouth gripping against his crest, pulling hard at the strands of his equally dark hair. Aadhira squealed loudly in surprise and in pain, trying to tug away from her. Strands of his hair ripped from his skin, eliciting a wince as he stumbled backward in the sand.

Aarushi shook her head, spitting out the little chunk of his hair she’d managed to tear away. “Priya tumhaaree mrtyu hogee.”

Aadhira shook his head, still defiant. “Nahin.”

“Aap kaaran dekhenge nahin. Aap kho rahe hain.” Disappointment and anger swelled inside her, making her feel disgust as she looked upon her brother’s face. There were so many things she wanted to ask him, so many things she wanted to remind him of. Why should he suddenly think her a villain when all she’d done the entirety of their lives was keep him safe? Why suddenly was this new mare, this ajanabee more important than his judwhi? “Aap mere lie ek ajanabee ban rahe hain.”

Her tone was soft.

Aadhira lifted his eyes to hers, guilt clear across his face. It might have made her cave, were she not so angry with the way he was acting. With her gaze narrowed disappointingly on him, Aarushi watched him for a drawn-out moment, hoping both the sting of the physical punishment she’d dealt and her words were enough to sink deep. Hoping he would remember where it was she was coming from. Then, when enough quiet had passed, Aarushi turned her back on him and walked slowly away, leaving him to stew in the reminders she had given.

She paused only when she came upon a stronger scent than hers, her brother’s, or Priya’s. Turning her head, Aarushi watching the lone figure where he stood. An idea occurred to her then and it was one which caused her to glance around and make certain neither Aadhira or Priya were too close… she would speak to this stranger alone.

Easily moving through the sand, Aadhira approached him, head held proudly high. When she spoke, the accent of her native tongue laid heavily over her words. “You are the king? Rougaru?”
