Drika grinned at her Peak sister as Klara introduced herself and her new companion, then shot her amber eyes at the young boy as he confirmed his name. “Hi Santiago,” she replied with an excited bob of her head. But his name was not the most interesting thing about him. A the mention of the Lagoon, Drika’s bright, tawny eyes grew big and round. The Lagoon! Merete had told her daughter several times that was the only place on the Crossing she was definitely not allowed to go. It was too dangerous for a young girl, especially alone – that was what she always said, and each time it ignited her daughter’s curiosity a little bit more. “The Lagoon?!” she exclaimed, glancing between Santiago and Klara excitedly. “Mama said we should never go there, what’s so dangerous about it? Why are you allowed to stay there?” Her expression took on something of a pout as she grew frustrated at the thought. If this kid could go explore the Lagoon why couldn’t she? It didn’t seem fair. She looked to Klara to judge her reaction. |
