Elfin Hunting on Carden Alvar Posted on May 9, 2018 at 09:42:57 PM by Bob Bowles
I visited Carden Alvar today with the focus to find a Brown Elfin, a common butterfly species seen yesterday in Simcoe but have not found it at Carden. It was a nice day to visit but high winds carried butterflies away quickly. Great in sheltered spots surrounded by the calls of Brown Thrashers, Eastern Towhees, Field Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Chipping Sparrows, House Wren and Pine Warbler.
Butterflies observed were Black Swallowtail, Mustard White, Cabbage White, Olympia Marble (a favourite at this time of year), Henry's Elfin, Eastern Pine Elfin, Hoary Elfin but no Brown Elfin. Eastern Comma, Question Mark, Gray Comma, Mourning Cloak, and Red Admiral (good observation). There were also a few blackflies. Replies: There have been no replies.
