A few months ago, I was saddened to see that Red-headed Woodpeckers are now classed as a Species of Concern or At Risk (can't quite remember exactly). However, I am really happy to report that we have had (and continue to have) a breeding pair at Balm Beach, in Tiny Township. for the last 4 or 5 years. Last year, the nesting site was in a very mature oak directly above our cottage, and contained 3 young. This year, I suspect the nest is very close by again, and perhaps again in one of out trees, since I thought I caught site of a nestling who was still pretty fluffy, and not moving off its branch. Other cottagers report seeing the adults regularly at their feeders. Doing our bit to help these stunning birds--well, not really doing much except thrilling every time we see them. There is no red quite so amazing a that of the red head of a Red-headed Woodpecker--they are stunning to see. Replies:
