I disagree- nurses and optometrists do not do retinal and macular laser, cataract surgery, or supervise the trainee in casualty or in theatre. Nurses and optometrists do not examine with the indirect or have a knowledge base to make complex diagnostic decisions. They do not suture lid lacerations or inject steroid implants.
Finally if you look at the NHS job website there are plenty of specialty jobs advertised. So why? If nurses and optometrists could do the work?
