This kind of exploitation is not uncommon. I have seen it happening to other people.
I'm not sure one can do much.
Contracts are not watertight and purposely leave a lot of room for this kind of atrocity.

Brave of you to resign. Many others have lot of personal, moving and visa issues and have to put up with it.
