Any thoughts as to what this bird might be? Potentially a migrant:
We were at a lovely, remote B and B south of Meaford over the weekend, and our host, a birder herself, was stymied by a call she couldn't identify. It was too shy to show itself ... if she venture outside it would vanish, and call from a spot much farther off. It was a clear, mid-tone note repeated with a slightly accelerated pace as the notes reached their end. Similar to Swamp Sparrow, but a cleaner, less metallic note. Not a Field Sparrow because it had none of the 'bouncing ping pong ball' effect.
Habitat was mixed open farm meadow with walnut trees, apple trees, a few domestic chestnuts. A large farm pond at the foot of the property and dense deciduous forest beyond -- several thousand acres of bush interspersed by farms actually.
Our host says it's driving her "barmy" because it keeps singing by her house, and spiriting away when she looks for it.
