live life to the fullest

The stallion seemed observant of her wary behavior, choosing to give her space, for which she was thankful. He seemed so sure of himself but she had such little experience with stallions. Her father chased off all males in their herd once they reached their second year and started paying attention to the mares in the herd. She lost quite a few friends to these raids but her father assured her it was for the best. She had never questioned her father, not till she herself matured to her second year and started wondering what else was out there. The stallion pricked his ears, watching her intently but with gentle intent. He wasn't pushy so for now, she didn't feel the immediate need to run. It wasn't enough for her to let her guard down quite yet but she pawed the ground nervously and listened when he spoke. He smiled when she spoke of the grass before lowering his own head to snatch up a mouthful. She shifted back and snorted softly but watched with her ears pricked, curious of him despite her wariness.

He called this place the Crossing Isle. Her ears flicked back and forth, memorizing the name. She glanced around, making sure she'd know where she was next time she came here, if that was the case. She didn't even want to leave, really. It was just so beautiful and the grass tasted like pure heaven after so long without. He asked if it was her first time here and after a moment of contemplation, she nodded her head. "Yes." Luckily he didn't say anything about her obvious fear of the water, instead telling her it was the best time to visit the other islands. Her ears pricked, gaze sweeping over the water behind him as if another island would magically appear. There were other islands out there with horses on them? They swam between the islands regularly? They must all be in great shape for such strenuous exercise. Her gaze went back to him as he explained why it was the best time to year to do his swimming. He mentioned that the winter months was more dangerous which prompted another side look at the water and a soft snort as she drew her head back some.

"I can't see how deep water would ever be safe." Next, he asked where she was from and she took a moment before answering, her shoulder rolling as she shrugged, her ears flicking back in her discomfort. "I don't really know, to be honest. I know my parents called it the Valley but they never mentioned the exact location to me. I don't even know what direction I went in to get here. All I know is I feel like I've been walking forever." She felt like an idiot. Maybe she should have questioned her parents more. Surely they would have told her more if she'd only asked. She was so tranquil with her life as it was that she never thought to question her surroundings. She just always felt safe there. She knew her father would keep them all safe, no matter what. Now, she'd never felt so lost and alone.
