It's a total mystery. But I doubt it was simply mechanical failure by itself. It usually never is. I'll bet there's some pilot error involved, even if there was a significant pitot-static issue. There's also GPS and radar-altitude inputs, in addition to three different and separate pitot-static systems onboard. They all talk to themselves, throwing out the offending/erroneous inputs. The first rule is always: Fly the airplane. Fortunately, this won't be a mystery once they analyze the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit Voice Recorder.
