Tracking Your Vote

A news item yesterday revealed that your vote can be tracked in just about any county in the US (hey, Bill Crawford, even Jefferson County - I.e. Canon City!). Curious, I went to the site and discovered that with simply my first initial, last name and birthdate, I could in fact check the status of my vote. The available information revealed that I had filed my ballot on 26 Oct and that it had been accepted based on a review of my signature and confirmation of my address. I checked this out with names of friends from my contact list for whom I have their birthdate - I was amazed. I learned that one of my wife's friends had mailed her ballot but that her husband had not.

Bottom line - careful about revealing your birthdate. It is also used by numerous financial institutions to verify your identity. I am a member of a a senior center which keeps a roll of their members including telephone numbers and birthdates to facilitate contact among members and their desire to congratulate others on their birthdays. I have suggested that telephone numbers be listed only upon member's approval and that listing of birthdays exclude the year of birth.
