Calliope Hummingbird in Goderich

The smallest bird in Canada and the U.S. has been seen in Goderich, Ontario by scores of birders over the past few days. At least some Muskoka birders have made the trek (about 3.5 hours from Gravenhurst) and to the best of my knowledge every twitcher has seen this gem. It has been regularly appearing at a feeder in 15 to 30 minute intervals and survived the very cold week. If you are thinking about making the trip, this is the weekend to do it as those who are trying to provide the bird with some protection while also organizing the opportunity for birders to see it have indicated that visitors to the private property will not be invited after Sunday. The address is 323 Bennett Street East, Goderich, and birders are asked to arrive only between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. (See other details per Glen Coady's ONTBIRDS posting.) I believe this is the first recorded sighting of the Calliope in Ontario, a bird that is about the weight of a ping pong ball or 1/3 of what our smallest warblers weigh.
