I agree. But my wife insists that if we hadn't withheld the money, we wouldn't have saved it, otherwise.
(And I think she's right).
[Also, the interest rates paid on money held in savings accounts is extremely low.
I googled up the following percentage numbers:
"..The average interest rate on savings accounts is a 0.08% APY, but many of the largest financial institutions in the U.S. pay lower rates, around just 0.01% APY.."
As I read it, that means that if you had placed $2,000 of a potential rebate into a savings account rather than withholding the money, you would have earned 20 cents in interest!]
