finches changing colour


A number of the male Goldfinches at our feeder today (Green River Drive Washago) are beginning to show small patches of their breeding plumage. It's a nice sign that winter will not be eternal ... but at the same time I kind of wonder if this isn't consuming valuable energy, when the little fellows need as much as they can just to fend off the cold and wind.
One other note: yesterday at the waterfront park (Washago Centennial Park) a juvenile Bald Eagle made a brief swoop over the open water and disappeared into a perch on the shore. It might have explained the sparse numbers of waterfowl where they usually abound.
