If you honestly think Ophthalmology in England has a problem with racism you are wrong. I work in a large teaching unit and there has been only one white trainee, and these are generally 'posh' home counties types. The rest of the trainees (over 20) are all from 'ethnic minority' backgrounds. Many of them are from outside the EU, such as Egypt, Middle East countries or of Chinese ethnic origin. I look around College meetings and most ophthalmologists are not white-the white male appears the true minority. Despite this, I am amazed to see college adverts encouraging applicants from female and 'ethnic minority' backgrounds. The white working class male is an unusual finding actually from what I see and regularly observe.
