Blackmail about references

I am being forced to work extra hours and take extra responsibilities without extra pay. I wanted to leave, they are threatening me that they would screw up my references in a way to make sure that I never get another job if I leave. This is blackmail. What should I do, just put up with this abuse keeping mouth shut?! I am a middle grade by the way.
