Ebba and I have decided that we (or at least I) must make the 70th! And upon thinking about that forthcoming event, I have an idea for the class. Could we put together a book, publication or whatever to collect the many historical and memorable events in which our classmates have participated? Don Walsh's trip to the deepest part of the oceans would certainly be a candidate for inclusion. The horrifying and brave survival of our POW classmates should be included. My suggested title for the publication is "Fifty-Four Folklore". Of course we must salt the publication with humorous tales of life as midshipmen. If my idea flies, below is my suggestion for an entry of a humorous bent - sorry if, by chance, I have submitted this story before.
"During our first-class summer cruise, one of the phases in which we participated as part of our training was the Navigation Phase. As part of our training during this phase, we had to shoot and plot stars to establish a fix on our location. Upon the appointed hour, a youngster would awaken first-class midshipmen within that training phase so that they could conduct the afore-mentioned star shootings. On one morning, I was already awake whereby I was able to hear the youngsters going about their appointed rounds. One of my classmates, upon being awakened, rolled over and inquired, "Is Pasztalaniec up yet?" The youngster, obviously having been properly indoctrinated by Academy life, replied, "I'll find out, Sir!" Minutes later, the youngster returned with the announcement, "Sir, a lot of stars are up, but I was unable to find out which one is Pasztalaniec!" Replies: There have been no replies.
