During my years in aviation, the call signs were chosen by the pilot himself. Normally they were mildly humorous or "belligerent," that is to say, projecting an aggressive image. They needed also to be clearly understandable in less-than-ideal and brief radio transmissions. They were not used in daily conversation when addressing others, though. That seems to be the custom today.

I also am a bit surprised and disappointed at the common use of foul language. That which is caused by extreme surprise or an accidental occurrence seems reasonable to me, but sprinkling four letter words throughout an officer's conversation leaves me thinking some enforced introspection may be needed.
