During WW 2 Navy had a lot of them . One of my distant relatives was a JG flying them out of Rabat French Morocco mostly ASW work. I think they were also based at Key West for ASW work. Dont think they were used for transport , and, they are BIG Targets in the big Sky. Seems should be evaluated and tested for use carefully.
