House Wren Late Nesting

This Pine Lake boathouse bird box has served many occupants. Originally occupied by Tree Swallows in the 1990’s before they vanished; for many years it was used Red Squirrels, Flying Squirrels and mice as shown by the chew marks. Once, five years ago a pair of Great Crested Flycatchers raised a family. Then this year a pair of House Wrens, only the second time I had ever encountered them here. This reflects their recent spread in Muskoka plus sadly the increased urbanization of the area. They began nesting in June, presumably successfully and now are working on a second brood. August 16 seems mighty late for these birds to be feeding young but the Ontario Nest Records Scheme gives a late egg date of Sept. 01. The wren seems to have picked up some insect corpses along with the spider web.
