The sooty-colored mare watches as Neon's abdomen begins to twitch and she winces, briefly, at the familiarity of the sensation. They were both so pregnant, and so close to their due dates. All the excitement over Warsaw and Jabari couldn't be good for them. But it was over, she kept telling herself. It's all over now.
The mare is surprised when Neon approaches, draping her muzzle over her back and beginning to work with her teeth along her coat. It wasn't that the grooming ritual was unfamiliar to her. It's just that Vita Nova rarely had any female friends to engage in just a friendly, intimate act. The only one she could think of that wasn't her mother was Evren, and it had been years since she'd seen the leggy filly. Then there was Brienne, Shamwari's former lead mare, but the mare had died years ago. Vita Nova didn't know if she could feel more sorry for herself than she did in this moment.
She breathes a great sigh and an ear flicks back to hear Neon's kind words. She bobs her head in response and pivots slightly so she could return the favor. Nova breathe's in Neon's scent at close range before peeling back her grey lips and beginning to groom her friend as well. They groomed quietly for a few moments, until Nova felt Neon lift her head, and then speak.
"Yes, two foals. Tavas, that wild palomino filly is mine." Vita Nova explained. Tavas lived with them, after all, so she assumed Neon would have seen her around. Her build and her color made it quite clear that Warsaw was not the filly's sire, however, no matter how hard he tried to be. But Nova chose to keep that information to herself. She craned her head back so to see Neon with one eye before asking, "Is this your first?"
Vita Nova flicks her tail softly over her haunches. "It can be scary at first, but you'll be just fine."
