As I see it in the article, all of the interviewed Generals were retired, and most all of them spoke off-the-record.

Speaking of the recent Syrian turn of events.
One has to ask oneself whether keeping one thousand troops in Syria is worth preventing our hard-fought allies, the Kurds, from getting done in by the Turks.
Also-- What's going to happen to the ten thousand ISIS prisoners?
