i do what i want

His strong legs churned in the ocean waves, carrying him closer and closer to the shores of a new island. He didn't know where he was, but a part of him didn't care. Anything had to be better than living under that dimwit he used to look up to. River wasn't his father, but he might as well have been. Kamekaze's father was injured badly in a fight with another stallion when Kamekaze was very young, under a year old. He never really recovered. In the meantime, River took advantage of a weak lead stallion, but allowed Kamekaze's father to live out the rest of his days among the only horses he knew and cared for. That earned River some instant points with the herd, which meant taking over wasn't a big deal. Kamekaze came to admire River and started following him around, wanting to be just like him.

He was his only father figure, so he'd have to do. River took him on as an apprentice and started to teach him everything he knew. But as Kamekaze grew older and stronger, River started to look at him in a different light. Instead of welcoming him into conversations, he started to drive Kamekaze away from the rest of the herd little by little until there was no doubt that he was seen as a threat. When confronted about it, Kamekaze expected River to own up and either challenge him or drive him off completely. The last thing he expected was for River to deny it and play dumb, saying he had no idea Kamekaze felt excluded and that he still wanted him around. Then he promptly blindsided Kamekaze one afternoon while he was taking a nap, attacking him out of nowhere, probably hoping that in his drowzy surprise, he would win easily.

But Kamekaze came to pretty quickly and started to fight back. At first, it was more in defense than anything, but as River drew more blood, Kamekaze started to feel the lust of battle and his own attacks became more vicious. Finally, he had River on the defense, and then on the run. It felt good, a new rush that left him high in a whole new way. But when the dust settled, River was gone and the herd was looking to Kamekaze for direction. Wait, what? He didn't sign up to run the herd. He didn't want that responsibility. Snorting, he looked at the lead mare with his signature smirk and a shrug before high tailing it out of there. He didn't stop till he hit the water, then he kept swimming till he saw land again. A new land, where there would be no River or responsibility. At least, not until he wanted it.

When he touched land, he shook off and tossed his head. The air smelled great and the grass in the meadow was soft beneath his hooves. Snorting, he let out a whinny before taking off across the meadow. You'd think he'd be tired from all the swimming but if anything, he felt more energetic than ever. He didn't even care that the water then the running had made some of his injuries from River bleed again. He'd never felt more alive. He kicked up his heels and gave a few bucks, crying out again playfully before he made his way to a tree to rub his head and ears against it. He let out a groan of pleasure as he rubbed first one ear then the other against the rough bark.
