mind my wicked words

Argento found himself figuratively left in the dust when Diamant lurched forward, beelining for a nearby stranger. Gent froze in surprise, ears pricked, and when he registered what Diamant was saying, he jogged to catch up.

“Unc, no--” he called out, though he was unable to resist a chuckle under his breath. But Diamant had not heard him; the stranger was already chatting back to him. “Home”? What a coincidence: Uncle had led them right to a potential escort, unnecessary as it was.

“So sorry to bother you,” Gent said to the stranger with a wry smile. “My dear brother here forgot that my memory is a little better than his.” Gent cast a meaningful side-glance at Diamant, whose dark face had turned sheepish. It gave Gent only the smallest of pangs to deliver such a low blow. Diamant could be awfully sensitive and moody at times, but Gent was trying to teach him to lighten up, to see the funny side of his medical condition. In time, he would learn - especially once they were among the rowdy bachelors once more.

Gent turned back to regard the stranger for a few moments. He was a somewhat short, if strikingly-colored young stallion, and seemed friendly enough. Gent did not recognize him, but there was no telling how many new faces the Lagoon had seen since he’d left.

“You’re one of the brothers, then, are you?” he asked with interest. “We both lived there once upon a time. In fact, I played Big Ol’ Boss for a little while. Who’s running the place now?”
