Ylva felt a little surge of satisfaction as her topic of conversation was well-received, and for a strange, brief moment, she felt as if she was outside her own body, looking down and watching herself converse with Zjeena and Rayna. Ylva considered where she had been nearly two years ago: freshly washed-up on the islands, young, and terrified. While she was still young, she felt as though she had aged ten years since then. She was a mother now, to three children nonetheless, and had experienced so much, both bitter and sweet. Poor two-year-old Ylva could never have foreseen what was in store for her. Now, standing here chatting to two horses that shared her lineage, Ylva felt as though she had come full circle.
“Nattergal and Havelle,” she commented. “Such unique, lovely names. I do hope our children become good friends.” Ylva’s eyes briefly dropped to the gentle swell of Zjeena’s belly. It was early, but she sensed that Zjeena would soon bring another into the world, for Ylva’s heat was fading, but Zjeena’s was already gone. Ylva did not comment on this, however, feeling it would be impolite given they had only just met. As the conversation turned to Rayna, Ylva again pondered who her dam might be. Then, as if a lightning bolt had struck her, she remembered that Liland had mentioned a mute mare called Sabela the day she had arrived. While Ylva had not yet become acquainted with her, she recalled seeing a quiet roan mare around. Now that she knew what to look for, she could see a little of Sabela in Rayna: only a little, but enough. “How is your mother, Rayna? I don’t believe she and I have had a chance to speak yet.” It was a moment before Ylva realized what she had said, and her expression spasmed with momentary horror. “Er-- I’m sorry.
