PERSEPHONE

Persephone had been foolish, and it was not something that she was used to. Almost every decision in her life had been meticulously thought out, planned and evaluated until she was quite certain it was the best choice for her. And yet, what was perhaps the biggest decision in her life thus far, had been decided swiftly, and based on emotion rather than logic.

It had been impulsive and reckless, and after some time to quell the panic within her that the war had stirred up, she now had some doubts. With each passing day, however, small signs began to convince her that it was too late for her to change her mind.

She needed a distraction, and pacing through the Forest was often her choice of activity – a brisk walk was good for clearing the mind, and she could use the impending war as an excuse for her constant patrolling.

She had felt a little withdrawn from her herd mates as of late, due to her self-involvement, but there was at least one companion who was usually able to distract Persephone from her own anxieties. She spotted Evren through the trees as she was passing through one of the Forest’s small clearings, and let out a soft nicker to attract the other mare’s attention as she approached.

“Evren,” she began, reaching out to brush her muzzle against Evren’s. “How are you doing today?”

The question always seemed to hold more weight these days, in the midst of chaos.
