Kestral is not always involved in the lives of his children. His nomadic lifestyle isn't usually conducive to family life. He participates only where his involvement is welcome, and Vasilisa is one of the few who stuck by him long enough for him to play the part of father. He did not raise his daughter to regret her own decisions. He is proud to see her defend herself against the criticisms of Rougaru.

There is nothing wrong with being young and inexperienced. Kestral doesn't know this Requiem, but he is confident the young stallion will succeed in time, especially with a strong mare like Nampeyo at his side.

There is much of this conversation that Kestral doesn't understand. He doesn't know every name on these islands, or the reputations that precede them. He is aware of this, so tries not to judge the other stallions too harshly, but his attitude leaves much to be desired. Kestral was smiling as the foal scrubbed away at his spots, but the smile fades when Rougaru makes such snide remarks. Kestrals ears remain forward, and his head bowed in respect, but he makes a mental note to avoid paradise from now on. He gets a feeling that he and this other stallion might not get along.

Keen senses this as well. She continues to circle the gathering from above. As Rougaru makes his exit, the harsh cry of the hawk follows him into the wood. Is it a threat? No one may ever know.
