Y L V A

Her stomach flutters when Liland offers her a caress in greeting, and when he pulls away her cheeks are flaming hot. There is something different about him, she notices. He seems more relaxed, somehow, though this could be explained by his recent victory against Warsaw. Ylva’s world had nearly crumbled around her when Warsaw had come for her - she had been dreading that day since she’d first arrived in the bay. Yet Liland had not let her down. His stout, sturdy body that was made for the snow and his youth had paid off against the slimmer, older stallion. As a result, Warsaw had left empty-hooved, and Ylva is not ashamed to admit she had cried tears of joy.

Though part of her expects they have not seen the last of Warsaw - for she knows as well as anyone how proud and stubborn the old stallion is - for the time being she can allow herself to feel some kind of peace and security. Ylva smiles appreciatively when Liland brings this up. “Yes, I watched your battle from afar,” she tells him. “I was so scared for you but so proud when you defeated him.” Her smile widens into a beam that makes her dark eyes gleam. But her joy is short-lived; the news Liland delivers next, about Zjeena, makes her expression drop with shock. “Oh,” is all she can say to that.

When Liland brings up Torsten and Warsaw’s names in the same sentence, Ylva feels cold dread wash over her. Her eyes lower to stare at nothing as she considers what he had said. To say she “doesn’t like” Warsaw is an understatement, but Liland does not know what had transpired between them. The thought of letting her son see him… it is almost too much to bear, but she cannot deny Liland’s reasoning. Torsten is growing up fast, and she cannot control him forever. Yet a million different worries spin through her head, and she feels her throat tighten with sudden overwhelming emotion.

“Warsaw was no father to Torsten,” she tells Liland in a quiet voice, still avoiding his eyes. “But you are right. My son has his own mind. If he wishes to visit his father… I suppose I cannot stop him. I just worry… I worry that Warsaw would use him as leverage, or try to turn him against me. Warsaw is not an honest stallion like you are, Liland. But if that is what you wish… I will talk to Torsten. It’s best it come from me.” Ylva raises her eyes to meet his, and she can only hope that he can read the silent fear and desperation in her face.

But then Liland tells her something that momentarily makes her forget her woes. Ylva’s eyes widen, and she stares at him blankly for a few moments. “Oh, Liland,” she says with a half-hearted laugh, and when she blinks, tears streak down her cheeks. She feels dizzy from all this new information. It doesn’t feel quite real. “Thank you, I - I don’t know what to say. This is such an honor, but… but I don’t feel worthy.” She dips her head, unable to meet his eyes as tears continue to wet her cheeks. A queen? Her? The thought simultaneously thrills and terrifies her.
