The Rules
  • There will be no fraternizing with enemies. If you put yourself knowingly in danger, don't expect a rescue.
  • We are only as strong as our weakest link. See to it that you are getting stronger in some skill that is useful, whether it is battling, recruiting, charming, etc.
  • The King and Queen have final say in all matters.

Sometimes with Vihaan, it felt like she was reading him like a book. He felt vulnerable, exposed. He could feel her just looking at him sometimes, like she was trying to piece together who he was now, how different he was from when they met in the meadow. He knew only time could show her that he was really different, that he was changing, hopefully for the better. Somehow, seeing her here in the Desert was like seeing the dunalino mare in her prime. It just felt right to have her here, like she already belonged, like the Desert was her true home. But Cain knew it wouldn't be home to her if she didn't want it to be. He would work on making this place a home for her, a place she wanted to be. When he told her she wasn't a prisoner and could go see her family, he saw the flicker of surprise.

He didn't want prisoners. He figured that out along the way and Leonid was the final straw. He wanted them to want to be here. That made it all worth it. His brown eyes took in the rounded edges of her belly. Pregnancy looked good on Vihaan. Of course, he thought it looked good on all his mares. They were things of beauty. She thanked him and he nodded his head in acknowledgement, before she gave her father's name as Shamwari. Cain smiled. "I haven't had the pleasure of meeting him yet." He was trying to be more polite this time. He remembered well how he shot her and her relations down in the meadow. Of course, he'd been pissed about being cut off from Everglow at the time, but still. She seemed very family oriented and he needed to respect that.

The tobiano could tell that Vihaan noticed his skin flinching as she moved to touch him. He was starting to relax more, but only around certain horses he'd come to expect good things from. In time, Vihaan would surely land under that title as well, but for now, he knew she could do damage when she really wanted to. They moved toward the trees and Cain let her pick the path and the speed, just as before in the meadow. Sure, that was for a whole different reason, and he could only hope she wasn't thinking about that right now to futher paint him in that negative light. He knew what he did and he regretted some of it, but at the same time, if he hadn't done what he'd done, he wouldn't have met Vihaan. Once under the cover of that group of trees, the pretty mare collapsed and folded her legs beneath her. She looked so poised, so in her element.

Cain sighed in contentment and slowly lowered himself down a few feet from her, not wanting to get in her space but wanting to put her more at ease by lying down at her level. The silence stretched on around them for a minute before she spoke. Her words weren't what he was expecting though. He looked over at her, his brow furrowing in concern. "You know what they say about what doesn't kill you, though." He offered in a soft murmur. Not wanting her to get the wrong idea or think he wanted her mother dead, he added. "Bringing such strength into the world must have sapped her of her own in that moment." He glanced over at her, trying to gauge her expression. She looked so upset in that moment, her face tightened and she almost looked angry. He just couldn't piece out who she was angry with. Him? Herself? His brow lifted as he waited patiently.

Then it hit him. She was pregnant and getting close, he was sure. She'd just brought up her own mother's close sweep with death upon her own birth. Was she afraid? His expression softened, his ears flicking back as he looked at the sand for a moment and thought. "You are strong enough, Vihaan, more than strong enough. I won't let anything happen to you." He murmured the words softly to her, not sure if she would believe him or not but he had to try. She had to know that he would protect her, that he would do anything to keep her safe. Maybe he couldn't make the birthing process easier but he could be there for her if she wanted. He wanted her to know that he saw her strength, her courage, her will to go on.
