Ylva’s ecstasy at being reunited with her first real friend on the islands is brief. As Solaris explains that things are not going well for her, Ylva’s heart sinks and her face crumbles into concern. “Oh no,” she whispers sympathetically, but before she can ask Solaris to elaborate, Solaris’s eyes drift away and she changes the subject. Ylva follows her friend’s line of sight to see Liland watching over them a short distance away. She flashes him a small, nervous smile before turning back to Solaris.
“That’s Liland,” she says. “And yes, thankfully… though actually, it was a mare who came to my rescue: a mare called Shaydowfax from Salem, shortly after Torsten - my youngest - was born. Salem didn’t suit us, so she was kind enough to send us back to Tinuvel. Liland is Warsaw’s neighbor, but he is nothing like him. He is kind and gentle and keeps us safe, which is no more than I can ask for.” She shakes her head. “But enough about me. Solaris, what’s wrong with Paradise? Does Rougaru not treat you well?
