ow do you tell your parents that they made a mistake, taking you away from your birthplace? How do you tell them that you were going back, to make it right? I shook my head, pale gold and white tresses flew across her face, sticking to my soaked skin. I had gotten out of the water a little while ago, but I was still heaving a little, my body was not used to the trip across the sea. But I desperately wanted to find the nearest freshwater stream, or river, to be able to rinse the salt off of my skin. It was making me itch. I kept nipping at the taught skin across my ribcage, trying to get that annoying twinge to go away. But it didn’t. The temperature wasn’t too high, and I was thankful it was spring, less heat, meant I’d have a little bit of a chance to rid myself of the itch before it got worse. I heeded mother and father’s warnings, staying away from the common, knowing that force claiming was allowed within its boundaries and I wasn’t ready to belong to one boy. Because lets be honest, I had no idea where to look anymore, and I wanted to be able to enjoy myself as I wandered the islands. Not being tied down, sounded to be the best idea.

he long grasses of the meadow called my name, and a small smile slipped across my maw as I let my long legs eat up the long distance from the edge of the shoreline to the heart of the long grasses. They were full and bountiful, lush, supple grasses. I couldn’t resist reaching down, grabbing a large mouthful of the sweet greens, closing my eyes as I sighed, enjoying my first bite of food. It tasted of freedom, pride, and purity. Whether that would hold true or not, I’d see. I paused, not wanting to gorge myself on the grasses, when an idea popped within my mind. I didn’t hesitate to lay down on my side, enthusiastically rubbing my sides against the grasses before rolling to my back, scratching the itchy salt off of my hide.

T
his continued for a few minutes, as I thrashed from one side to another, scratching all the salt off of my skin, reveling in the relief that spreads across my body. My white speckle striped belly was visible for a few moments before I rolled back to my right side, laying my head down in the soft grasses, breathing heavily, for a few moments until I drew myself to my knees, taking my time to stand back up. Tossing my head, freeing a few blades of stray grass from my tresses, letting my hazel eyes look out on the horizon. Waiting. For what… I don’t know.
