He was entranced watching Vihaan as she took her first look at the colt beside her. The instant love and affection there was unconditional, the love of a parent and he felt his own chest tighten as memories blurred in his own thoughts. There were foggy images of a mare, his mother, and her kindness to him as he grew and developed. There was a more traumatic memory, one where his mother screamed and cried for her son as he was separated from her and taken to a different pen. He remembered screaming back, trying to leap from the arms of his captives as they herded him away from the only life he'd ever known. That was the last time he ever saw his mother. He shook his head of the dark thoughts, forcing himself to be back in this moment with Vihaan and his son. He didn't want to lose a second of it.

Cain was proud of the dunalino mare and wanted her to know it. He'd always believed that she'd be able to do it, that she'd be able to pull through and be a wonderful mother. He just needed to make her see it too and thankfully, he felt that she now could see it. When he spoke, at first she didn't seem to want to look at him and when she finally did, it was like she didn't believe him. His brow lifted expectantly. Did she really expect him to lie? The tobiano stepped back to give her space when the mare went to stand, but the way she suddenly looked at him had his ears straining forward, wondering if he said something wrong. When she said that he couldn't say things like that, he tilted his head. "Why?" It seemed an easy enough question. She didn't seem unhappy or offended so he was puzzled. She started to stutter over her own words as she tried to explain what she meant.

Cain lowered his head, his expression softening as he snorted and waited for her to continue. He followed her gaze to the striped colt, watched as he got to his hooves for the first time. The stallion's chest swelled with pride as his son moved to drink from Vihaan, and when she turned back to him, she said that the colt's name was Akello. Cain smiled and lifted his head. "A strong name. I'm sure he'll fit it well." As the mare watched her colt in awe, Cain took the moment to study her face. She looked exhausted, but even so, she could still look majestic. She was really something else. When Vihaan suddenly moved toward him, Cain tilted his head, watching her curiously but he held his ground and kept himself relaxed, wanting to show her that he was trusting her. She reached her muzzle out and he closed his eyes as he felt her soft lips tracing over his face. A soft groan of pleasure left his lips and his ears pricked at her words.

His eyes opened as she spoke, saying his words mattered and the truth mattered to her. His brows furrowed, his lips forming a thoughtful scowl as he studied her face. When she asked if he understood, he slowly nodded. "Of course. Honesty is all I've ever known, even when it hurts." He reminded her of his words back in the meadow. He gave his word that he wouldn't go after Everglow and he didn't. She said that she didn't mean to doubt him and he offered a small smile. "I know I'm not the easiest to get to know...and to trust. But you can always trust me to be honest with you." She told him not to say things just to make her happy, that all she wanted was honesty. He nodded. "Your happiness means a lot to me, but not at the risk of lying to you." He could practically hear his own heart beating in his ears with how close they were to each other. Her warm breath tickled his muzzle but he couldn't take his gaze away.

Then she said something about desire and his ears pricked up, his whole body at attention suddenly cause he liked where this was going. Just the tone of her voice made his skin tingle with anticipation, his eyes not daring to leave hers as he waited as patiently as he could. He knew that she was far too hurt and exhausted to do much right now but just knowing that she felt that way left him feeling charged and eager. When she moved her muzzle to his ear, he felt a shiver run down his spine of pleasure, his nostrils flaring as she spoke. A slow smile pulled at his lips. "I desire the same." As she moved her muzzle back oh so close to his, he took the moment to reach out, hesitating only a second, his eyes finding hers to ask permission. This was his way of showing just how much he'd changed. No longer would he just take what he wanted or force himself on others. He waited for something from her, a cue, a signal of her consent. And only then would he reach out to let his velvety muzzle touch hers softly, affectionately.

When she asked if it was real, his eyes gleamed with hope. "It is for me." He couldn't answer for her but he was assuming by the question itself that she felt something at least close to what he felt right now. He saw her even now as the fierce warrior who stood up for those she cared about and so she would stand up for what she believed in. She was also kind and had a heart of gold. He continued to meet her gaze, eager to see what happened next.
