Female Barrow's Goldeneye at Bala

This female Barrow's Goldeneye, along with several Common Goldeneye, was spotted Sunday just downstream from the bridge over the Moon River on Muskoka Road 169 in Bala. The rain/snow mix and lack of weekday construction activity seemed to encourage the birds to feed closer to the highway than has been observed in the past. The bird was reported again yesterday just after noon.






Diagnostics included the mostly orange bill fading to black near the base and with a dab of black at the tip, as well as a darker head and slightly larger body mass when compared with the Common Goldeneye.
