He searched her gaze as she looked at him, seeing the heavy emotion there but not understanding its true meaning. Love and all emotions like it was still a mystery to the paint stallion, having been without it for so much of his life. He knew that he would do anything for this herd and the mares within it. Vihaan had become very precious to him and he didn't want anything to happen to her. He would never forgive himself. He would feel like a failure since she was of his herd, therefore his responsibility. But he knew this meant a lot to her. She cared fiercely about her family and wanted to make sure they were okay. He had to do this for her, to prove he trusted and believed in her. That's what he'd been trying to do since she came to the Desert. What better way than to let her go? Still, he felt his chest tighten at the very thought of her never coming back. What if he lost her?

But Cain couldn't think like that. If he did, he would go insane. She said that she understood what she was asking and would never allow someone she cared about to walk it with her. His eyes narrowed fiercely as he nickered softly. "Someone who truly cared would never ask permission to walk it with you. They would just escort you, like it or not." Even so, he let his lips twitch a little in humor to show her he was not trying to be forceful. He just wanted her to know that if it wasn't for the safety of the rest of the herd, he would be going with her, no matter what. As she stepped to him and curled into his embrace, he felt himself melt around her, his neck wrapping over hers protectively as he let out a sigh of contentment. He closed his eyes for a moment as he breathed in her sweet perfume, trying to memorize it like it might be the last time.

When she finally stepped back, she told him Primrose would help with Akello and he nodded. "I know. I'll still miss you though, as will he." The words felt odd on his tongue but he knew the truth of them even as he spoke them. He saw the shadows in her eyes when she mentioned Primrose and he knew what that was about, his lips scowling at the very mention of the new weight between them. He hated himself for it cause he knew it was his own fault, but a small part of him resented Shamwari and even Primrose for making his past transgressions known to Vihaan. She wasn't ready to forgive him for it and he didn't like the thought of any distance between them. In such a short time, they'd become so united and strong together that he hated any kind of burden between them. He knew only time would help though so he resigned himself to be patient...something he was never that good at to begin with.

As Vihaan stepped away from him and into the surf, he found himself snorting and stepping forward as if to go after her. He held himself back though, watching her with pricked ears and flared nostrils as she stepped even further from him. He hated the distance already, the herd stallion in him wanting to rush into the water and haul her back into the Desert where he was assured she belonged. With him. When she looked back and found his gaze, he let out an agonized whicker, his eyes soft and pleading once more for her safe return. "Come back to me." He whispered, not even sure if she would hear him. But as if she knew exactly what he was thinking, she said she promised before running further into the waves and starting the swim for Luthien. He took another step until the water reached his fetlocks, watching her slender form disappear into the waves and he felt his heart thumping so hard it might beat right out of his chest. He watched until there was nothing left to see in the ocean, feeling like a piece of him was missing and wondering if he would ever feel whole again.
