Live through this lie

Was I left behind?
Tell me, tell me I survived.

I felt the heat rising from my gut. It splintered through my extremities in this tense exchange between the two-toned stallion and myself. My muscles bunched at the warmth, bracing with trepidation but ready for use, if needed. However, Cain remained level headed and calm, despite my aggressive entrance. Later, after the anger had left me and I had time to reflect on this moment, I might come to admire Cain's poise under such pressure. He read the situation and chose his words with great care, always seemingly heedful not to escalate the situation. But right now, all I cared about was Vihaan. Cain's words were direct and truthful. Despite his explanation, there was no excuse for the belligerent, bully-like behavior that drove Vihaan here.

My copper-colored ears pricked forward as a rare, dry Desert breeze cut through the sands between us. It carried with it the scent of Vihaan. But something was different about her perfume. It was rich and strong, like a mare in season. I watched Vihaan's pale form become sharper over the dunes, her gait gaining after a clear moment of recognition. But it wasn't until she drew closer that I noticed the foal hot on her heels. I stiffened again, instinctively, my gut churning in anger. My ears lay flat atop my skull as I forced a sour, threatening expression in Cain's direction. "How dare you." I managed to grumble before Vihaan arrived.

Her expression was surprisingly gleeful, and I nickered warmly to her. But it was difficult to wipe the disdain and shock from my facade. "Vihaan, dear. Are you okay?" I needed to know this first and foremost. But my daughter was too elated to show off the colt at her side - her son, Cain's son. She called me his grandsire and I felt a hard lump begin to scratch at my throat. The colt stumbled forward and I feigned a smile. I dipped my head to him and reluctantly spoke. "Hello, Akello."

I felt relieved when the colt left, and I breathed a heavy sigh. "Vihaan, I am sorry to ask this. But Akello.... Did he -Cain- force you?" My honey brown eyes searched my daughter's. Concern was apparent across my features. I needed to hear directly from her what had happened here, once she'd left the safety of Luthien's shores. I wasn't sure I could forgive myself for ever letting her go. She answered me flatly, her tone even and her words rather direct. I believed her, even if I didn't want to. I swallowed hard against that lump which persisted in my throat and snorted.

"It's hard for me to believe that a stallion who forced you here has suddenly turned over a new leaf." I hated to be skeptical of Vihaan's assessment. But I had to know for sure.

But before Cain had a chance to defend himself, a cry from another filled my ears, and I am struck by what I saw. Primose galloped frantically toward us, with a foal of her own in tow. I looked to Cain and then Vihaan before tearing off from the group to meet her halfway, and whinned wildly as she approached. "Primrose, thank God." I said as we embraced, my nostrils flared as I breathed in her scent. "We've been worried sick about you." I had so many questions - and so much to tell her. I wondered if she knew that Roheryn was in fact, her new neighbor.

"How long have you been here?" I asked immediately, still attempting to connect the dots on how seemingly all of my daughters had run-in to this brute. "Are you okay? Did he hurt you?"
