The Lagoon, the stallion says to her, where you will now be calling home. He smiles at her, but something about his smile isn’t nice or comforting like smiles should be. Arkana is confused, and her heart is hammering so hard she can hear her blood rushing in her ears. She wants to ask what the Lagoon is, and why she would want to leave her current home, but the clamor of the fighting stallions nearby is distracting and frightening. Arkana’s eyes slide back and forth between Adolfo and the other two stallions, unsure of which she should be more worried about: getting hit by a stray hoof or this stallion in front of her who seems to want to take her somewhere.
Then suddenly the grullo stallion, the one who seems the least scary, is right beside her, his breath hot on her tiny ear. Arkana shrinks away, thinking for a moment that he’s going to trample her, but his command reaches her loud and clear. Then Arkana is all but pushed out of the way as all three stallions begin fighting again. Once she’s at a safe distance, she stops and looks back at them, but she can immediately see this is a mistake. Adolfo’s eyes are on her again, and he’s moving toward her. Then Arkana hesitates no more. She turns and sprints into the depths of the forest to find her mother.
