Time seemed to be passing excruciatingly slow. Vita Nova just wanted to finally feel better... To wake up one morning and for this splitting headache to be gone, and for her bones to stop aching. She wanted to feel alert and sharp again. She hated feeling so dazed and so weak. While the sooty-colored mare had certainly made tremendous strides toward recovery, each day brought a new challenge.
Vita Nova was growing used to Warsaw's absence, even though she loathed it. She missed the warmth of his body pressed against hers in the night, and taking aimless strolls through the varied Inlet terrain with their two boys. Warsaw barely had time to meet his daughter, Brunhild, before he left for the war. She was growing so fast now. Vita Nova wondered if Warsaw would still recognize her by the time he returned.
If there was a silver lining to this tulmultous period of her life, it was that Tavas was here. She felt so connected to her two daughters - the three of them spending nearly all of their time together these days. Vita Nova could feel Ironclad pulling away - the twins were becoming more and more independent, and she knew it wouldn't be long before they would soon strike out on their own. As such, having little Brunhild to take care of made the pain of that realization a little easier to bear.
On this early morning, Vita Nova grazed gingerly near the open mouth of the sea on the Inlet's beach. She hobbled delicately over the black pebbles that made up the beach, watching from a short distance as Brunhild played. The sun was finally peeking out from behind a week's worth of seemingly endless, dark clouds, and she reveled in the warmth it provided on the small of her back.
